CRISIS IN CAPITALISM LEADS TO A CRISIS IN DEMOCRACY, OPINES SHRI ARUN MAIRA

  A crisis has hit Capitalism, and its adverse effect leads to a crisis in Democracy, opined Shri Arun Maira, Former Member, Planning Commission & Former Chairman, Boston Consulting Group while participating in the Second Purpose Roundtable conducted by the Centre for Higher Purpose in Business. Elaborating on the Corporations' role in the new world, Shri Arun Maira said, "Business corporations have created a system where the institution's sole purpose is to give maximum profit for its investors. Owing to the limited liability, the investors' liability is only to the capital that one had invested. They are not liable to the adverse effect the business is having on society. This selfish nature of business is now corrupting democracy, wherein the Corporations have become more equal citizens of society than others".

'STOP CONFUSING CSR WITH PURPOSE' SAYS SECOND PURPOSE ROUNDTABLE

  After the first Roundtable's massive success, the Centre for Higher Purpose in Business organised its Second Purpose Roundtable on January 15, 2021. Discussing the theme "Higher Purpose in Business: Transcending CSR?" Thought Leaders opined that Businesses must move away from Profit Maximisation and redesign themselves as Social Enterprises. Shri Arun Maira, Former Member, Planning Commission & Former Chairman Boston Consulting Group, and Shri Suresh Narayanan, Chairman & Managing Director, Nestle India participated in the Roundtable. Shri V K Madhav Mohan, Growth Multiplier and Mentor led the discussion, and Shri Dileep Narayanan, Founder & Brand Mentor of Organic BPS curated the Round Table. Shri Arun Maira advocated the need for teaching a Systems Thinking habit in every Business leader, where one should assess the impact that the decision would have on the larger society and called upon Management schools to teach this in their curriculum. HAPPINESS FOR PROFIT

  This week, I had stumbled upon an interesting article in my XLRI Alumni newsletter wherein one of my senior alumni speaks about the need for a second innings from Astachal to Astachal. I had never heard this word before and so would be the case with many of us. It is a mythical mountain where the Sun takes refuge every night. He argues on the need for every individual to reflect on what we do between two Astachals and plan for a second innings if the one we are leading is not the right one. Along the same lines, in the new post-pandemic normal where thousands of organizations have stopped functioning and many SMEs across the world (approx. 30% in Europe based on a recent study) may file for bankruptcy, I am wondering if this is not the time for businesses to begin introspection on a second innings.
